I just read your blog, after reading one of your posts in the forum.  I wanted to comment on your question about surgeries.  I just recently had an emergency colostomy done.  If it hadn't been an emergency I never would have had it done willingingly, since all I've heard about stomas was fairly negative.

Just before Christmas, I was visiting my brother and got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.  I'd been having some problems with constipation, so I was making a harder effort than usual to try and have a bm....lol.  Well, the effort blew a hole in my colon and distended my bowel.  My brother took me to the hospital (omg, the pain was horrific!) and 8 hours later I was in surgery.  I really had no idea what was going on till it was all over and done with!  Which turned out to be for the best in the end.  Since having the stoma, I'm not on any drugs for the Crohn's (although that could change), I sleep through the night, and I have no pain, no urgency, no blood, no nothing!  It's fantastic.  I never thought pooping in a bag would give me back my quality of life.  Don't get me wrong, it's a life altertering change, but it's more than doable.

So don't be scared of surgery...there are some horror stories out there of course, but at least for me, it can turn out to be a wonder ful thing.  Especially if they get most of the diseased parts out and can keep it in check afterwards.  Also, they can do some of the resections laproscopically so you won't have the huge battle scar that I have.

Hope this has been helpful...take care and good luck!

Cindy

Hi every one!.  This is my first time writing a blog of any kind so hopefully it will be alright.  I stumbled upon this site a few weeks ago and finally decided to join.  I have never met any one else with Crohn’s disease, and I rarely talk about my symptoms so hopefully I will get braver about what I post as time goes on.  Here is my story.  I was diagnosed with

Crohn’s disease when I was 14 years old.  I am 26 now.  I have luckily never had to get major surgery (yet), although I have had some minor ones related to my Crohn’s.  Besides having this awful disease, I have a pretty good life.  I have a wonderful fiancé who helps me through the hard times and although I don’t have a lot of friends, the people who I do keep in my life are exceptional and I am grateful for every one of them.  I have three dogs that help to keep me from feeling too sorry for myself.

I am currently going through a hard time with my health, and frankly I could use the support.  I have been having a lot of bleeding and a lot of pain and urgency.  I was on Remicade for years and it was wonderful but it has finally stopped working.  I am now on Cimzia which doesn’t seem to be working at all.

I have been reading all of your posts and I find them very helpful.  I really like “Imisspopcorn’s” screen name because I too miss popcorn!!! I had a few questions for anyone who has time to answer.

First of all, one of the hardest things to deal with for me is missing work.  I was wondering how others cope with this.  Sometimes I miss weeks of work because of pain or illness.  Have you ever lost a job because of your Crohn’s? I don’t think that there is any danger of that for me now, but I do have a boss who calls my time out sick my “vacations” although I have explained to her what is going on with my disease several times.

Also, how do you manage your day to day pain?  Does any one do meditation or yoga?  What medications work for you?
Lastly, what are the benefits of having some intestines removed?  Those of you who have done it, do you recommend it?  It has been offered to me as an option in the past but not for many years.  I have tried other medications instead and luckily have avoided that road so far.  This is more a question for down the road if that option becomes necessary.
Thanks for reading.  I look forward to hearing back from you.
